Economics of Nepal
As per a BBC Nepal news article (bbc.com/nepali) of 2025 March 21:
- Public debt of Nepal has been increasing since a few years
- Total debt so far: 26.76 kharba (47 % of GDP)
- This year (2082) budget plans to take 217 arba from foreign and 330 arba from internal as debt
- Total debt to take 547 arba
- Total debt to return 402 arba
Nepal has taken loans from multiple bilateral (8) and multilateral (16) lenders
Percentage of total external debt among major creditors is
- World Bank (IDA) – 49.02%
- Asian Development Bank (ADB) – 32.42%
- Japan (4.22%)
- India (2.99%)
- China (2.66%)
- 47% debt is low compared to other countries and countries in south asia. But it is fine only when the money is being used effectively in productive sector.
